Lanark County Ambulance Service provides community ambulance service to the citizens of Lanark County. The Service operates nine vehicles and an emergency response vehicle at four bases and averages 13500 calls per year.

Lanark County Ambulance Service now participates  in the Eastern Ontario Centralized Testing Process. This process involves a written component, practical scenario, skill stations, stair chair lifting assessment, followed by interview and reference checks. The Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) carries out a range of Primary Care duties in keeping with the MOH&LTC 90th percentile response time standards, assessing and treating patients; transporting patients to and from health care facilities, preparing and submitting reports; safely operating the Service vehicles and ensuring the stocking and safeguarding of vehicles, equipment, supplies and medications; performs other related duties or tasks consistent with the duties and tasks outlined below.

  • Education:
    Community College Diploma (2 year program) in emergency health care/paramedicine (EMCA) or equivalent

  • Certificate/License:
    Required to achieve within 210 days from the date of hire certification as Primary Care Paramedic in the Province of Ontario

  • Current qualifications that meet the requirements of the Ambulance Act

  • Current driver’s license as required by the Ambulance Act with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated.

  • Knowledge/Abilities:
    Basic life support medical care methods, procedures and techniques

  • Base hospital systems, policies and procedures employed in the Province of Ontario

  • Air Ambulance procedures

  • Ambulance Act, Regulations and Standards

  • Highway Traffic Act

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • Ministry of Health policies, procedures, guidelines and specifications related to ambulance service, base hospitals, equipment, supplies, use of drugs, vehicles, base stations

  • Meet requirements as outlined in the Ambulance Act and associated regulations

  • Carry out the duties of a PCP, including examining and determining treatment and care priorities and providing basic life support care at the scene, including symptom relief, and semi automatic defibrillation; en-route and on arrival at the medical facility, as required

  • Exercise sound judgment in emergency situations and in respect to public relations, patient/family interaction where empathy and support must be displayed

  • Safely operate the Service vehicles

  • Work closely with other Ambulance Service staff to identify opportunities for improvement and participate in a co-ordinated approach within the assigned field office, to meet or exceed system performance expectations

  • Appropriately interact with medical facility staff, and other agencies in both routine and emergency situations

  • Complete physical fitness and medical evaluation

  • Lifting ill or injured patients and associated patient care equipment

  • Work varying shifts

  • Treat patients, co-workers and other Ambulance Service, medical and co-response staff with respect and integrity

  • Personal Suitability:
    Be in excellent physical health and able to lift, as prescribed by the work

  • Be able to work under pressure and make rapid, appropriate decisions

  • Independent, able to work effectively with minimal supervision

  • Proven track record in working effectively in emergency care environments

  • Criminal Reference Check:
    Successful candidates will be required to pass a criminal reference clearance to the satisfaction of the Lanark County Ambulance Service

 The 2007 Selection Testing Process will be in Ottawa. This will consist of the following: 

  • Written Exam
  • Practical Scenario
  • Skill Stations
  • Lifting Component.

     The Eastern Ontario Centralized Testing Committee also reserves the right to ask any applicant to complete additional physical testing at a later date. Interviews and references will be conducted by the individual services.

This is the fastest and most direct method of applying.

 Applications will be Pre-screened and invited applicants will be notified by e-mail or phone.  Invited applicants must confirm their attendance at one of three sessions for the Written Exam scheduled on Feb. 5th to 9th, 2007.. Two time slots will be available on each day at 09:00 hrs and 13:00 hrs.

    Each applicant will provide an expression of interest at the Written Exam component for which services they wish to apply. They will be required to sign a Release of Information letter.  All applicants must provide their Class “F” drivers licence or equivalent at the Written Exam with a photocopy for Human Resources. Any applicant failing to have the Class “F” will not be allowed to continue.

    To advance from the Written Exam component to the Practical and Skill Station component, a pass mark of 70% will be required. Successful applicants will be scheduled for this portion of the testing on the day they write the exam.  All Practical Exams will be scheduled in the month of March in Ottawa.

Upon conclusion of the Practical components, all results will be forwarded to each of the participating services. Each individual service will then invite those successful applicants they wish to interview for a position
