 Employment - Level I Paramedic
If you are interested in a professional career
as a Paramedic with the Lanark County Ambulance Service, the following are the
prerequisites as per the Ambulance Act of Ontario.
- must read, write and speak English fluently
- must be 18 years of age
- hold a valid Class "F" Ontario driver's
license
- hold a certificate of graduation from a
recognized college in Ambulance and Emergency Care
- hold an Ontario Secondary School Graduation
Diploma in which you have passed biology (other sciences will help) or other academic
qualifications approved by the Director
- obtains EMCA or Advanced EMCA certification
within 210 days of completion of program
- obtain Symptom Relief/Defibrillation
certification prior to commencement of employment
- not convicted of any crime. involving moral
turpitude for which he/she has not been pardoned
- for 3 years prior not have been prohibited from
driving under the criminal code
- not have had your driver's license suspended for
two years prior to application, and for a period of one year, not have had six (6) demerit
points recorded on your record
- maintain current driver's license number 2 years
prior to employment
- mandatory immunization for tetanus, diphtheria (in past 10 years),
polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Hepatitis B (in
past 15 years) Tuberculosis test (in past 2 years).
- must be free from any communicable diseases
- holds a valid Restricted Radio Operator (R.R.O.)
license.
The Ambulance Emergency Care Program runs at
selected community colleges from September through to May for a total of 1,500
instructional hours. Every year approximately 800 applicants apply for 50 seats in the
A.E.C. Program; for the best chance apply early, before January. The following is an
outline of the courses in the program:
- First Aid
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Community Health
- Emergency Patient Care I (theory)
- Ambulance Operation and Safety
- Human Relations
- Ambulance Service I (on road as third person)
- Psychology
- Microbiology
- Moral and Ethical Issues
- Emergency Patient Care II (theory)
- Emergency Patient Care Lab. II (hospital clinical
rotation) Rescue Procedures
- Emergency Patient Care II Lab. (seminar)
- Symptom Relief and Semi-automatic Defibrillation
- Physical Education
- Ambulance Service II (six weeks ambulance on road
experience)
On completion of the Ambulance and Emergency
Care Program the student is eligible to write the Provincial Emergency Medical Care
Attendant (EMCA) exam.
How do I prepare for the recruitment process?
Reading BLS standards as it is necessary to refresh your memory. Both the written test and
the clinical test will verify your knowledge of the Life Support Standards.
Documentation is mandatory; consequently the applicants are informed of the list of
documents required prior to being hired.
The list includes:
* Photocopy of Driver's License (both sides)
* All immunizations:
* Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella
* Diphtheria and Tetanus (in past 10 years)
* Hep-B (in past 15 years)
* Tuberculosis test (in past 2 years)
