Employment - Level I Paramedic

If you are interested in a professional career as a Paramedic with the Lanark County Ambulance Service, the following are the prerequisites as per the Ambulance Act of Ontario.

  • must read, write and speak English fluently
  • must be 18 years of age
  • hold a valid Class "F" Ontario driver's license
  • hold a certificate of graduation from a recognized college in Ambulance and Emergency Care
  • hold an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma in which you have passed biology (other sciences will help) or other academic qualifications approved by the Director
  • obtains EMCA or Advanced EMCA certification within 210 days of completion of program
  • obtain Symptom Relief/Defibrillation certification prior to commencement of employment
  • not convicted of any crime. involving moral turpitude for which he/she has not been pardoned
  • for 3 years prior not have been prohibited from driving under the criminal code
  • not have had your driver's license suspended for two years prior to application, and for a period of one year, not have had six (6) demerit points recorded on your record
  • maintain current driver's license number 2 years prior to employment
  • mandatory immunization for tetanus, diphtheria (in past 10 years), polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Hepatitis B (in past 15 years) Tuberculosis test (in past 2 years).
  • must be free from any communicable diseases
  • holds a valid Restricted Radio Operator (R.R.O.) license.

The Ambulance Emergency Care Program runs at selected community colleges from September through to May for a total of 1,500 instructional hours. Every year approximately 800 applicants apply for 50 seats in the A.E.C. Program; for the best chance apply early, before January. The following is an outline of the courses in the program:

  • Emergency Patient Care I (theory)
  • Ambulance Operation and Safety
  • Human Relations
  • Ambulance Service I (on road as third person)
  • Psychology
  • Microbiology
  • Moral and Ethical Issues
  • Emergency Patient Care II (theory)
  • Emergency Patient Care Lab. II (hospital clinical rotation) Rescue Procedures
  • Emergency Patient Care II Lab. (seminar)
  • Symptom Relief and Semi-automatic Defibrillation
  • Physical Education
  • Ambulance Service II (six weeks ambulance on road experience)

On completion of the Ambulance and Emergency Care Program the student is eligible to write the Provincial Emergency Medical Care Attendant (EMCA) exam.

How do I prepare for the recruitment process?

Reading BLS standards as it is necessary to refresh your memory. Both the written test and the clinical test will verify your knowledge of the Life Support Standards.

Documentation is mandatory; consequently the applicants are informed of the list of documents required prior to being hired.

The list includes:

* Photocopy of Driver's License (both sides)
* All immunizations:
* Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella
* Diphtheria and Tetanus (in past 10 years)
* Hep-B (in past 15 years)
* Tuberculosis test (in past 2 years)

Listed below are the community colleges in and around Ontario that offer the A.E.C. Program:

Lanark County Ambulance Service now participates  in the Eastern Ontario Centralized Testing Process. This process involves a written component, practical scenario, skill stations, stair chair lifting assessment, followed by interview and reference checks. Apply to: (http://www.ottawa.ca/) See Instructions at bottom of page.

 

The proposed Centralized Testing schedule is for anyone seeking employ in the following services: 

  • Ottawa Paramedic Service
  • Renfrew County
  • Lanark County
  • Frontenac County
  • Unitied Counties of Prescott Russell
  • Leeds and Grenville
  • Hastings–Quinte

 The 2006 Selection Testing Process will be in Ottawa. This will consist of the following: 

  • Written Exam
  • Practical Scenario
  • Skill Stations
  • Lifting Component.

     The Eastern Ontario Centralized Testing Committee also reserves the right to ask any applicant to complete additional physical testing at a later date. Interviews and references will be conducted by the individual services.

   Applications submitted to any of participating services will automatically be channeled into this selection process. Applicants who are interested in applying to any of the services involved may apply on-line through the Ottawa web site (http://www.ottawa.ca/) and follow the instructions below:

This is the fastest and most direct method of applying.

 Applications will be Pre-screened and invited applicants will be notified by e-mail or phone on Feb. 24,2006.  Invited applicants must confirm their attendance at one of three sessions for the Written Exam scheduled on Feb. 28, March 1 or March 2, 2006. Two time slots will be available on each day at 09:00 hrs and 13:00 hrs.

    Each applicant will provide an expression of interest at the Written Exam component for which services they wish to apply. They will be required to sign a Release of Information letter.  All applicants must provide their Class “F” drivers licence or equivalent at the Written Exam with a photocopy for Human Resources. Any applicant failing to have the Class “F” will not be allowed to continue.

    To advance from the Written Exam component to the Practical and Skill Station component, a pass mark of 70% will be required. Successful applicants will be scheduled for this portion of the testing on the day they write the exam.  All Practical Exams will be scheduled in the month of March in Ottawa.

Upon conclusion of the Practical components, all results will be forwarded to each of the participating services. Each individual service will then invite those successful applicants they wish to interview for a position
